2023 AHCC Tour of Goolwa – Rider info No2

Hi everyone

Safety is always our No1 concern at our events, and the TOG is no exception.

For the TOG, we are on open roads and there will be over 200 riders participating.  We all need to work together to ensure everyone’s safety.

All of the normal racing rules apply however these key points are stressed:

Keep left!

Crossing over the center of the road on open roads, white line or not, is not allowed. Please stress this to your team members. Violations will be penalized.

If it’s a windy day still keep left! Do not hug the white line.

For Stage 3, the section of Waitpinga Rd that has no line marking – from Dennis Rd to the top of the hill at Range Rd – is closed to traffic coming towards you. It remains open to traffic travelling in the same direction as you. You are able to use the whole road over this section but please keep as far left as possible to allow cars coming up behind you to pass, allow faster riders to pass, and as a precaution in case a wayward car finds its way onto the road heading toward you.

Respecting directions from race officials

Please also ensure your team members respect and follow Commissaire and other Race Official instructions, even if this is one that pulls someone from the race for some reason.

Sprint finishes

Both Road Race stages (Stages 2 & 3) will have finish-line sprints.

Riders must hold their line and not endanger other riders

Team tactics

The TOG is a teams event and teams are expected to work together to benefit their members.

As we are racing on open roads though, blocking other riders (say, two members of a team blocking the peloton while other team members break-away) is unsafe and is not permitted.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

We hate imposing penalties on riders for racing rule breaches but hate even more the prospects of, or having, accidents with resulting harm to riders.

Regards

Don and Dave

2023 AHCC Tour of Goolwa – Rider info No1

Hi TOG team members

Great to have you all coming along to the 2023 AHCC Beyond Bank Tour of Goolwa.

Here is some information for you all (a couple of other posts will follow with some further event-specific and stage info).

Day 1: getting there.

We have been advised that Alexandrina Rd, between Strathalbyn and the Main Rd into Finniss, will be closed to traffic due to road works.

If heading to Finniss via Strathalbyn, allow extra time as traffic diversions will be in place (we understand the diversion will be along Nine Mile Rd then along the Finniss-Milang Rd).

Day 1: traffic through Finniss and course changes

With the closure of Alexandrina Rd for roadworks, there will be increased traffic on Finniss-Milang Rd and going though Finniss where the event is based.

Please be careful when riding along the roads in this area.

The courses for Stages 1 and 2 have been changed to avoid Finniss-Milang Rd. Details, including maps, are on the web site here: https://www.adelaidehillscc.org.au/tour-of-goolwa/

Divisions, Teams, Start times, Distances and Start Lists.

Sign-on

  • The Tour registration desk opens from 7.30 am on Saturday (at the Finniss Store).
  • In your rider pack will be your race number, helmet cover and transponder (with cable ties). The transponder needs to go on the front fork as far down as you can get it. Please don’t place it on the head-stem or bars as it won’t record in the timing system.
  • For all stages, one of our volunteers will roll-call at the start of each event confirm riders who are starting.

All riders will need….

  • a red flashing tail light
  • an approved helmet (showing an Australian standard sticker)
  • to be at the start line for all events at least 5 minutes before their start time to ensure they receive the Commissaire briefing.

Helmet covers

  • are required for Stages 2 & 3 (the road races)
  • are not needed for stages 1 & 4 (time trial and hill climb)

Prizes

  • For Stage 1, prizes will be awarded at the Finniss Store after the Stage has finished
  • Prizes for Stages 2, 3 & 4, and overall winners, will be awarded at the Royal Family Hotel, 32 North Tce, Port Elliott after stage 4 is completed. Please come along and enjoy the time together.
  • Prizes will be for each stage, overall teams and overall individual – for each Division.

On-course support

  • Support and/or following vehicles are NOT permitted for any event.
  • In the event of a mechanical failure (including a flat tyre) that prevents a rider from finishing a Stage race, that rider will still be given a time – equal to that of the last finishing rider in the Division.

Feed zones

  • For the Stage 2 and 3 Road Races, a feed zone point is available for those doing the 79 km (Stage 2) or 87 km (Stage 3) course.
  • For Stage 2, the zone is in Milang on the return after the turnaround on Lake Plains Rd.
  • For Stage 3, the zone is on Waitpinga Rd – the eastern end past Blockers Rd, and is open for laps 2 & 3
  • Both feed zones will be marked with safety cones
  • You can have someone supplying your team with food and/or fluids but this person needs to be an AusCycling member (does not need to be a racing member – just needs a membership of some form).
  • If you plan to make use of this, you need to register that person with the Race Director (Don Clifton) by 9am Thursday 23 Feb – email to president@adelaidehillscc.org.au .
  • Those providing food/drinks to your team are responsible for clean-up.

Accommodation

Returning helmet covers, numbers and transponders

  • Please return these at end of stage 4 (top of the hill at the finish) or at the presentations at the Hotel.

Please feel free to get in touch if you have any questions or if we can help in any way

Regards

Don and Dave

Working at the 2023 TDU

Hi everyone

The TDU is looking for people to work at the event to set up and pull down the barriers at the start and finish points of the stages.

It’s a paid gig.

Here’s an email I received from Joanna Taylor from the recruitment firm who is organizing all of this.

If you are interested, contact Joanna  joannat@hoban.com.au  08 811 8502  0407 832 868

Thanks!

We provide labour services to SA Tourism to support the Tour Down Under and are looking for people to help set up the start and finish lines by positioning crowd barriers.

Some of y our members may be interested in some seasonal work and the opportunity to be up close to the event.

We are seeking to recruit across multiple shifts and locations. I have included the shift times and durations, as well as a link to the advert which contains some more information.

No previous experience required, just reliable people who are able to travel to the race locations and are able to lift the barriers. Lifting is two person, lifting barriers like those in the picture below from open sided trucks and moving to the start and finish and then putting back on the trucks at the end.

Volunteer at the 2023 TDU!

Hi everyone,

The 2023 TDU is looking for volunteers to do traffic marshal stuff for both the women’s and men’s stages.

Come help out. Get up close and personal with the event and be treated like a rock star  😊

You’ll get some $$ to cover your travel costs plus a bit. If we get enough of us going, the club will also get a donation so it’s a win-win.

You don’t need to have a SAPOL traffic marshal card as training will be provided. If you have a card, all the better  😊

Here are the races where volunteers are needed:

You can put your name down [HERE] and select the times you can help. Someone will then get back to you with more info (give us a holler if you have any trouble accessing this).

Questions? Just let me know and I’ll put you in touch with the good folk at the TDU who can answer anything and everything.

Let’s do this!
